Physician Well-Being Index (WBI)

Your well-being matters

Practicing medicine in today’s healthcare environment is challenging. The stress can take a toll on your well-being, particularly when dealing with medico-legal events.

CMPA is pleased to bring you the Physician Well-Being Index (WBI) in French and English.

Validated by the Mayo Clinic, this quick, user-friendly assessment tool allows you to accurately measure your well-being.

Why use the Physician Well-Being Index

  • Quick and easy: The assessment takes under 2 minutes

  • Monitor your progress: Track changes to your well-being over time and compare your results to peers

  • Access resources: Be directed to province / territory specific wellness resources

You can access the WBI through the CMPA website (CMPA - Physician support and wellness). Your CMPA credentials will be needed to access the tool, as a way to restrict our access to physicians working in Canada so as to preserve data integrity.  However, once you access the WBI site, which is completely separate from CMPA, CMPA has no visibility on individual answers.  CMPA only receives aggregate data, and therefore your answers are completely anonymous.

2025 National Physician Health Survey (NPHS)

Canadian Medical Association

Deadline: April 15, 2025

The Canadian Medical Association's National Physician Health Survey (NPHS) produces the most rigorous, comprehensive and widely cited pan-Canadian dataset on the well-being of physicians and medical learners.

Every four years, the survey helps identify and assess the impact and drivers of outcomes such as burnout, including workplace and system factors. This year's survey will also report on what may be driving physicians’ intention to see fewer patients; the impact of administrative burden; the use of AI tools; the role of physician leadership; as well as physician mobility; safety; bullying/harassment; and identifying unique challenges facing at-risk groups.

If you are a medical learner or practising physician, you are encouraged to complete the anonymous survey (linked below).

The information shared is critical in helping the CMA and other groups across Canada advocate for better outcomes for both physicians and their patients, as well as to improve the health care system.

The Canadian Medical Association, MD Financial Management Inc., and Scotiabank proudly support Well Doc Canada, one of several initiatives that comprise their $115 million commitment to supporting the medical profession and advancing health in Canada.
